Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

Microsoft Security Essentials vulnerability reminds that security risks are everywhere

Microsoft recently delivered a patch for its malware and antivirus tools, including Security Essentials, Windows Defender, MSRT, and Forefront -- its enterprise antivirus solution. The patch addresses a flaw in Microsoft's scanning engine which could allow an attacker who had a valid username and password to gain elevated rights on a system.

As is often the case with these flaws, the fact that the attacker has valid credentials is arguably a bigger problem than the vulnerability itself. However, there's an important takeaway: at any time, any program on your computer could be putting you at risk. Even your antivirus or anti-malware app.

It's important (and imperative) to keep your operating system and apps as up-to-date as possible. It also helps to know what other programs you can use to ensure your system is safe. Free Windows programs like Secunia PSI -- which scans your system for vulnerable programs -- and Returnil's System Safe -- which lets you complete roll back changes to your computer, including those made by malware -- can be a big help in locking down your system.

Microsoft will release Internet Explorer 9 on March 14 at SXSW

According to a source that's intimately familiar with the situation, Microsoft will release the final version of Internet Explorer 9 at the SXSW conference on March 14.

This information tallies nicely with what we already know: Microsoft has said that there will only be one RC, and March 14 very nearly fits the six-week release cycle that Internet Explorer has so far stuck to. Most importantly, though, the IE team is holding a party at SXSW -- and parties generally celebrate something.

Microsoft has already said that the RC will automatically update to the final version, but we're not sure whether a switch will be flipped at the SXSW party, or if we'll have to wait for the next Patch Tuesday. Either way, a direct download should be made available around 9pm on March 14.

If you haven't played around with the Release Candidate yet, you really should. It won't satisfy you if you're an avid add-on user, or if you sync between computers, but if you're just looking for a slick, spartan and speedy browser, IE9 ticks all the boxes.
