Everything you wanted to know about the T-Mobile Comet

If the T-Mobile Comet has piqued your interest, the read on, friend. The phone formerly known as the Huawei Ideos is expected to drop this week -- Nov. 3 to be exact -- and we've been handed every last little details on the phone. It's not being billed has a high-end device, and nor should it be. But it is being billed as the first entry-level Google phone (Google experience, that is), with Android 2.2, Wifi b/g/n and all the bells and whistles that come along with that title.

Yahoo! Mail Beta arrives, claims to be at least twice as fast, safer, easier to use

Last month we brought you a sneak peek at the new Yahoo Mail interface -- and as of today anyone can sign up. Other than the usual slew of new features -- a virus scanner, spam protection, sexy mobile clients -- this launch also heralds the launch of a very purple theme... which you can't seem to change...

There's an accompanying Yahoo! Developer Network blog post if you want details of the technical changes behind the new Beta. Most notably, Yahoo deployed a bunch of efficient HTTP proxies around the world that significantly speed up connectivity if you're not based near Yahoo's mail servers in the U.S. They also overhauled the rendering of the website itself, utilizing YUI 3, CSS3, and anything else that could reduce the amount of clunky HTML required -- gone are <table> elements!

All in all, the changes make for a much smoother Yahoo Mail experience. A lot of the cruft has been removed -- so much so that it looks a bit like Gmail, but with a "social" landing page tacked on the front. Let's not forget that Yahoo Mail, at least as of last year, owns the U.S. email market -- it's twice the size of Windows Hotmail and almost three times the size of Gmail. This update will affect, in a good way, how the majority of U.S. Internet users send email!

Droid 2 Global appears in Costco database for $199, T-Mobile Comet at $149

What happens when you punch the phrase "Droid" into a Costco sales terminal? If Boy Genius Report's sources are right, you see the Motorola Droid 2 Global ring up (in black and white!) for $199.99. Considering we're also seeing the 1.2GHz quad-band worldphone on a Verizon rebate sheet, it's a pretty safe bet the handset's coming out soon -- and if Verizon also lists the phone for that price, it could be the death knell for the A955. (We've gotten several tips today that the original Droid 2 has been marked for end-of-life at Best Buy.) There's also a T-Mobile Comet pictured above, also known as the Huawei Ideos, a low-budget Android smartphone whose $149.99 price will almost certainly be free of two-year contracts. Of course, in the spirit of Costco you probably won't get off that easily -- subliminal messaging will surely compel you to purchase the $24.99 Ewoks and Star Wars Droids Adventure Hour on DVD.

ITRI shows off 6-inch FlexUPD AMOLED, hybrid 2D/3D display, makes lots of promises

Hey, remember when Taiwan's ITRI said that flexible TFT-EPD displays would be ready for smartphones by 2009? Yeah, well, keep that in mind when reading about this new 6-inch flexible display the company says will be released in a line of e-readers "very soon." It's called the FlexUPD, a 1mm thick AMOLED with a 5cm folding radius, 150nits brightness, and "unbreakable" construction. ITRI is also talking up its switchable 2D/3D display that we saw earlier, able to display both types of content simultaneously and do so without the requirement of goofy glasses. That tech is called i2/3DW and is set to "revitalize the [display] industry by revolutionizing the concept of 3D viewing." You keep on believing, ITRI, we'll just keep on waiting.

Gmail launches new Labs feature: Auto advance to next message

Usually, when you hit Archive (or Delete) while reading a Gmail message, you find yourself back in the message list of whatever label you were reading (the Inbox, for most). However, once you're there, you usually just click the next message to keep on reading and handling your email.

So... why not just move on to the next message automatically? That's just what the Gmail guys thought, and hence this new Labs feature. Sure, you already have keyboard shortcuts that do this -- [ and ] by default -- but most people don't use them. This new setting makes the process automatic, so you don't have to remember any keyboard shortcut. You can also decide whether "next" means "the next newer conversation" or "the next older conversation." Very handy!

With the ubiquitous media coverage surrounding the iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) app market, it's important to remember that Android also is making huge headway. More than 100,000 apps are now available in the Android Market. Within the last six months, Android devices have reigned supreme, comprising 32 percent of all new smartphone purchases. There is finally a larger selection of models being manufactured and more carriers offering them. When the first Android device launched, I predicted that the OS would surpass iPhone in the coming years.
