iPad 2 Rumors

With the new year approaching very soon more and more rumors are beginning to surface regarding the next generation iPad, or iPad 2. Only time will tell what Apple really has planned. Not all of these rumors have been officially verified by Apple, however around March of 2011 it’s expected that a newly redesigned version [...]

Instagram for Android under development

Platform envy is pretty common with smartphone users. It's pretty much inevitable that popular apps will eventually make the jump from one mobile OS to the other, but the waiting game can often be frustrating. Still, at least you know it's coming -- and that's now the case with Instagram, the immensely popular photo filtering and sharing app for iOS.

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom confirmed to TechCrunch that an Android version of the app is in the works, though the company isn't specifying a release date at this point. After amassing a userbase of over one million in just three months on iOS, though, the company's priority is on getting an API put together. So until that happens, Android users, you'll need to content yourselves with an alternative app like Vignette.

Begun The Talent Wars Have ? How Twitter?s London HQ Could Woo Google Staff

We've reported before about how the escalating war for talent in Silicon Valley is effectively creating a kind of arms race between tech companies. For example, Google is offering employees a 10% pay increase for 2011; companies like About.me are getting acquired days after launch; and job postings in the IT industry are shooting to astronomical levels. Even Google's Eric Schmidt has admitted to this battle. Facebook, Google, Zynga and Twitter are hiring like crazy - and this insatiable desire for staff is likely to spill over into other countries. And perhaps the obvious first target outside of the Valley is London: English speaking, and a magnet for existing tech people in Europe working for US multinationals. And the latest to consider extending its reach there is Twitter.

Clear iSpot discontinued already

Well, that certainly didn't last very long, did it? Looks like Clear is already sending its unusual iSpot product to the great WiMAX network in the sky less than five months after its introduction. As a refresher, the iSpot's claim to fame is that it was designed to work only with iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads -- and in exchange for the crazy restriction, Clear would charge you less than $100 for the hotspot itself and just $25 a month for unlimited 4G access capped at 6Mbps down. Of course, it's easy to understand why Clear would want to forget the iSpot ever existed: its MAC address filtering was easily defeated and plagued with reports that even approved devices were being denied access, suggesting that the concept probably wasn't a solid one in the first place. For what it's worth, Clear retail stores are still selling through remaining stock if you're interested -- and the company will maintain a supply of units for warranty replacements -- but otherwise, you're out of luck.

[Thanks, rand]

Ford launches SYNC Destinations, the free app for people who go places in cars

Ford launches SYNC Destinations, the free app for people who go places in cars
Smartphone user? Regardless of platform you have no shortage of navigation options, and now Ford has added another way to get where you're going -- if you're also an owner of a SYNC TDI-compatible car, anyway. Using the new SYNC Destinations app (available today for iOS and Android, with BlackBerry coming soon) you can more efficiently pre-plan your route. The app lets you pick a destination, view real-time traffic updates, even check out congestion predictions based on weather, time of day, and holidays. It's a feature that would have been pretty handy last week when we were simultaneously dealing with a heck of a blizzard and a whole lot of people trying to flee their in-laws.

The app will even suggest what time you should leave to avoid the most headaches, a potential boon for those desperately seeking any excuse to hit the road a little early. It is, however, just for planning, sending your route to the car and then disabling the phone's display when you cross the magic 5mph threshold. It's safer that way, after all. Full details are in the PR below and if you're on the lucky two supported platforms with a suitably compatible car you can download today for free.

Trap the Tiger is a cute, checkers-like Time Waster for all ages

trapthetiger

When I was a kid, I used to love playing checkers; figuring out your opponent's next move, trying to trap their pieces and guessing what they'd do next. Trap the Tiger is a cute time-waster that captures some of that magic while being simple enough for kids to get and for grown-ups to enjoy (well, I liked it, at least).

The game starts off with a tiger at the center of the board, and a seemingly random arrangement of dark and light circles (the exact color scheme changes every level). When you click a circle, it becomes dark, and the tiger gets one move. The tiger can only move over light circles, one circle at a time. It tries to inch its way to the edge of the board, and eventually escape. If it manages to exit the board, you lose and the tiger wins.

It starts off quite easy, but quickly becomes complex. It doesn't have many bells and whistles, and I mean that in the most literal sense; the game is devoid of any sound effects. But if you (or your kid) is up for a few minutes of thought, you should definitely give Trap the Tiger a spin.

Let's Crate hands-on: simple drag-and-drop file sharing, but lacking important features

File sharing tools are all the rage. Ranging from the sync-oriented SugarSync, to the excellent workhorse of YouSendIt, and the consummate simplicity of Imgur, you have just about every base covered. It's a concentrated market with a lot of competition, but startup Let's Crate thinks it has what it takes to elbow its way into the money.

Espousing the KISS principle, Let's Crate hopes that the simple addition of drag-and-drop functionality and one crappy Flash flourish is enough to pull users away from tried-and-tested services. Unfortunately, that isn't the case: Let's Crate simply doesn't bring enough to the table.
